Land Opportunity
The American West was viewed as a land of opportunity and success for many people of different racial and financial backgrounds during the time between 1865 to 1890. However, the extent of success from the opportunity varied on multiple factors. For the homesteader, opportunity was based upon good weather conditions and hard work but mostly only large scale corporations succeeded. Mining provided little for the average miner; large mining industries profited instead.. At some point West was the land of opportunity and at the same time it was not a land of opportunity for Native American Indians and Minorities. The Homestead Act of 1862 was one of the most significant and enduring events in the westward expansion of the United States. It gave 160 acres of western land to anyone who promised to work the land for five years. This encouraged many immigrants to come to the United States and help settle the West. But the land was too arid for a homesteader to manage 160 acres. Life was hard in the west because of the harsh environment. They had sand storm and droughts, made impossible for farmers to farm. Very few actually made it work and managed to keep their homesteads.Opportunity was unpredictable for the average person, corporations benefited largely from the West (i. e. railroads). When the Transcontinental Railroad was finished in 1869, railroad tycoons realized the opportunity for railroad exploitation and then a railroad boom followed the economic recovery in 1878. Expansion of the railroads brought trade, settlers, and towns. Mining also played a major role during that time period. Gold, Silver, Lead, Copper, Zinc were traded with other countries which helped our nationââ¬â¢s economy.Ethnocentrism was the root of the problem for Native Americans and contributed their downfall and their loss of land and livelihood. Indians were pushed off their native lands onto reservations. Immigrants struggled to reach equal work standards and pay as whites. In conclusi on, at some point American West land helped build up United States economy. Railroad made it easier for people to travel and to trade with other countries easily. But Homestead Act made it impossible for people to farm because of the the bad soil.

African american case study Essay
David Brown is a 35-year-old African American residing in Brooklyn, New York. He is tall, lean, and professional-looking. He has short curly hair and neatly shaved face. He has been a successful bank manager for five years and his colleagues look up to him with much respect and admiration. But whatever he has now are the fruits of his hardwork and perseverance. David was born on the 25th of February 1972. During this time, racial discrimination was still prolific and their family experienced hard times. They live in the ââ¬Å"ghettoâ⬠where drugs, gang wars, and poverty were rampant. Growing up in such an environment was never easy for David and he found it hard to trust his peers because he did not want to get involved in their vices. His mother had to stay at home to attend to his other siblings while his father had two jobs to support their familyââ¬â¢s needs. Considering their situation, David was inspired to study hard and he wanted to give his family a better life. After graduating from highschool, he was determined to pursue college and was fortunate enough to be accepted in a known university to study Banking and Finance. College was the biggest challenge for him because first of all, his father had to support him and he had to work as a grocery clerk in a convenient store at night to make ends meet. Due to the color of his skin, David faced discrimination issues. His classmates regarded him as inferior and some even ridiculed him and his peers who were also African Americans. Whenever he felt down and mocked, he would play basketball because this was his outlet in releasing tension and built-up emotions. However, he did not lose his focus and he graduated with flying colors. It took him a while to land on a job since some of the employers were discriminating. After several months, he got a job offer from a banking company as a clerk. He was very happy because he was starting to fulfill his dreams of helping his family. He worked hard and loved this noble profession and eventually, his efforts were seen by his superiors. His determination and dedication made him climb the corporate ladder. Many got insecure and envious when he was promoted to his present managerial position. Some even doubted his leadership skills and capabilities in performing his duties but, David proved them wrong. In time, he was able to win their support and respect. à David is currently at the prime of his life ââ¬â he is successful and has given his family a better life. He does not have any intimate relationships because he prioritizes his family and work. Considering Eriksonââ¬â¢s psychosocial theory of development, David has gone through young adulthood and it appears that his lack of initiative to form intimate relationships lead to isolation. However, he could only be delayed in establishing intimate relationships with the opposite sex because of prioritization of other more important things. As of now, he is in his middle adulthood and it is most likely that he is experiencing psychological stagnation since he is not showing productivity in helping the next generation achieve their goals. Taking Freudââ¬â¢s theory of psychosexual development into consideration, David appears to be fixated in the latency stage because of his self-fulfilling goals and the direction of his energy towards productive activities like work. Though he knows how to socialize, most of his friends are males and he exhibits lack of interest in engaging in close relationships with women (Santrock, 2002). At this point, he should have been married like most people of his age and rearing a family of his own; but as mentioned earlier, David may only be delayed in fulfilling such human functions. Percys Intention essays
Percy's Intention essays Percy's novel has succeeded in making a vivid image of the South as it was seen through his eyes and through his direct experience. As we have seen from the second quote, many of his conclusions have come from a direct contact with the local Southerners, be they black or white. The idea I wish to start with and build upon is that, as seen from his black playmates, "mere living may be delightful". Indeed, Percy, in direct contact with the black population, can and is entitled to believe that from their point of view, living is "delightful" because life is beautiful even in bad conditions. The text itself lets us believe that one can manage to draw the beautiful things in life, ignore the less beautiful and simply include them in the "scenery". It may be somewhat of a recipe of a happy living. On the other hand, the whites seem to have their hearts set on virtues that "make living worth while". If we look at the two perspectives on life, they may seem the same, however, it is my personal opinion that there is a pejorative note regarding the white aristocracy and their style of living. Seemingly the same with the black style, easy, drawing the best of life and of the life experience, in the case of the white aristocracy, there may be somewhat of a negative note. I am asserting this considering the fact that perhaps one would associate the "making living worth while" with debauchery and an easy style. In my opinion, what takes the form of a gay life experience for the blacks, in the case of the white population, the aristocratic lifestyle is vain and However, even if we consider the discussion above, Percy's intention, in my opinion, is to draw some of the characteristics of life in the South and to include these characteristics so as to describe not blacks or whites, but Southerners, with their way of regarding life as a worthwhile experience, as he himself ...

IT'S AN AD,AD,AD,AD WORLD Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
IT'S AN AD,AD,AD,AD WORLD - Essay Example One would ask 'why people switch to buying online rather than visiting stores and feeling the actual experience. Online Shopping is shopping you do online. There are sites that let you buy directly from manufacturers, online versions of regular retail stores, auctions, specialty sites, comparison sites, group buying sites and so on. With companies like e-bay and Amazon, life has become easier for the firms as these sites contain not just only catalogs but also information about the related products which the previous buyers had viewed or tagged before buying the particular product. This adds to the ease of making decision for the customer. Further such sites also allow giving technical support to both the firm and the customer. For example e-bay provides seller tools to help run a business more efficiently, such as 'Turbo Lister' and 'Selling Manager'. The world is changing rapidly and therefore it is an agile competition overall. Each organization requires a perfect strategic edge in order to maintain or improve its clientele. The Web is regarded as the database of databases and in current perspective it has eased the search criteria for every individual involved in buying or selling online. But the point raised is of quality, as so far, the quality sources are difficult to find unless you have the right to enter into the virtual libraries of this world. Since it is more feasible to buy online so one may wonder how easy it gets to buy online, you simply have to type in a word or a phrase which best describes what you are looking for. You can use the product name, manufacturer or type. After you enter your search words, you'll get a list of items matching your description. Here you can witness the resource description as it contains almost all information required for buying purposes. These catalogs allow you to have a feel of the actual equipment and also provide information about the complements (add-ons) you can apply to your product. Simply click on any link for get more specifics. Many businesses have online catalogs. First you need to log on to any desirable site and the next thing you would do is, simply search for the product and make a decision. Firms have been using different strategies in order to attain a higher market share. They, not only advertise using the mainstream Web applications but also acquire information of users from different sites that have member areas, however these sites only provide data of those members who are willing to be public. The firms use this data and attract customers by sending them e-mails which carry the producers' taglines and the links to the ordering sites. This is rather a direct marketing tool used by firms and it has great potential in delivering quality ads to the target customers but the problem is of privacy infringement and therefore only a small number of persons contacted respond to these e-mails. The main forms of ads present on the Web are in forums, blogs, main pages, search engines and reference sites. In these ads, only the main content is highlighted that is they become more appealing to everyone. These ads attract about 1 out of the 20 visitors who would go for the product and view its features. Producers expose there products on the global stratum thereby attracting different people form different cultures. These ads

Has neoliberalism impacted men and women differently Essay - 1
Has neoliberalism impacted men and women differently - Essay Example The economic, political and cultural realities in throughout the globe have been undergoing radical transformation for the last more than three decades. The shifts towards neoliberalism have converged the concepts of liberalism with the market ideologies and principles. It has indeed been crucial to the extent it exerted a crucial impact in altering the gender geographies in many parts of the world. However it has also brought in new issues, new modes of regulating the selves and subjectivities, new ideological apparatuses stressing upon certain representations and exemplars, lifestyles, culminating in hegemonic forms of masculinity and femininity, and eventually the hegemony of market itself. A significant platform through which this mode of ââ¬Å"neoliberal governmentality has been understood and discussed is the very idea of instrumentality, as Butler, Joan Scott and others have doneâ⬠(Gill and Schraff, 2011: 5). ... technological devices have not only not eradicated the traditional structures of inequality but also have exacerbated the complexities through which the former structures are reproduced and/or operationalised in albeit new fashions. The two broad epistemological and pragmatic fields where the structures of inequality, subjugation and subjectivisation are constantly articulated are one, political and cultural and two economic and the global circulation of capital (Butler, 2004; Gill 2009; Gill and Schraff 2011). For the last more than three decades scholars and activists around the world have pointed at the varying schemes of capital at the worldwide level and the surging motives of profit relying chiefly on the availability of labour and, sometimes, resources from the so called Third world nations. This global paradigm is further conditioned within the gender realities that persist within these geo-political terrains to the extent women and children, especially from lower classes, ha ve continued to remain the primary victims of these neoliberal, neocolonial tactics (Nash and Safa 1976; Nash and Fernhdez-Kelly 1983; Leacock and Safa 1986). These gender realities were invariably products of a global economic circuits that was and still is western centric and a western centred discourse of human rights according to which these geo-political locales, on the one hand, were depicted as having highly degenerated human rights situation and, on the other hand, opened new areas for further socio-economic interventions (Nash and Safa 1976; Nash and Fernhdez-Kelly 1983; Leacock and Safa 1986). The relationship between the rich and poor in terms of an imbalance between the global west and the rest (Hall, 1994) is another major paradigm where the question of gender is hijacked and
